THE LIVING AQUARIUS

Information taken from the Natural book Reef Aquariums of John H. Tullock

It has been written much about a group of aquatic bacteria. Nitrosoms and nitrobacteria have been recognized by their importance in the called process biological filtration.

Each fan to the aquariums must include/understand the process of biological filtration deeply. Shortly, this important ecological cycle is the following one: the ammonium excreted by the fish and invertebrates is turned first into nitrits and soon into nitrates by means of metabolic activities of nitrific bacterium. The ammonium and the nitrits are highly toxic for the aquatic organisms, whereas the nitrates are it much less. The biological filtration consumes oxygen and produces compound acids like a resulting product. These two factors are important on the quality of the water of the aquarium.

These chemical conversions are half-full by nitrosom and nitrobacteria and few other types, collectively calls nitrificants bacteria. The cycle of nitrogen in the nature: the understanding of these channels nutrients is fundamental to obtain success in marine aquariums.
